Patrons of Beccles Public Hall & Theatre - Roy Hudd OBE

Beccles Public Hall is proud to have such a notable figure from the world of entertainment and national treasure, Roy Hudd OBE, as its first patron. Roy genuinely cares about our project to save this iconic community facility in the centre of Beccles and has already given his practical help with a fund-raising afternoon of entertainment.

Roy Hudd started his career in show business in 1958 when he took a summer job as a Redcoat at Butlins in Clacton. He first appeared on radio the following year in 1959 on the Workers' Playtime show and, of course, is best known for his very long-running BBC Radio series The News Huddlines.

Roy's varied career has taken him to television, films, stage appearances in panto and variety shows, musical theatre where he starred as Fagin in Oliver! in the West End, and, perhaps most famously, in music hall. In 1983 Roy was awarded the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for the "Best Actor in a Musical" for his role as Bud Flanagan in Underneath the Arches.

Roy Hudd is an eminent authority on the history of music hall and is the longstanding President of the British Music Hall Society. He has written several books on the subject, re-recorded music hall records and has appeared in The Good Old Days.

Roy is also well-known for his charity work and he is a Past King Rat of the show business charity the Grand Order of Water Rats. He was awarded an OBE in the Queen's 2003 New Year Honours for Services to Entertainment.

Roy met Debbie, his wife, nearly 30 years ago in pantomime in Nottingham , and they married in 1988.

We are extremely grateful to Roy for his practical support and for agreeing to become our first patron.
